Rade, or Ede people is one of the 54 ethnic groups in Vietnam, residing mainly in Dak Lak, the south of Gia Lai province, and a few parts of Khanh Hoa and Phu Yen provinces. They follow matrilineal tradition in which the head of the household is female. Children will bear the mother’s last name, and males do not inherit the asset when their parents pass away,
An interesting element of Rade culture is the longhouse. This is where many generations of a family live together. The house will be built longer each time when a female in the family gets married, which means more members. Therefore, just by looking at the length of the longhouse, we can guess how many people are living in that household.
