THE2The brewer must use brewing techniques that are traditionally based on traditional ingredients. It involves grain, malt, hops, water and yeast. It is okay to incorporate additional ingredients into the drink, it must be flavorful. As soon as a brewery adds something to lower-cost production they cannot call craft brews anymore. One additional requirement is for craft beers to have an annual limit of six million barrels. Please bear with us as not every craft brewery is considered a microbrew. Macro or micro is proportionate to the quantity of beer that has been produced. I think it's a little too complicated, does it?

What is regular beer?

Craft beer cannot be defined without first talking about normal beer as it's fairly vague. Those who hear “regular” beers usually think of a few common alcoholic beers, like Tiger or Heineken. Some people could refine the idea further and say regular beer is anything inexpensive local beer - 333, Saigon Special, Tiger - and so forth. Regular beer is bottled at major microbreweries as a mass. The goal is to bring beer to the wider provinces quickly and the concern is not about quality.

History of craft beer in Vietnam

Through the 1990s, the most popularly consumed beers in Vietnam have not changed, featuring both domestic (333, Saigon Special, Bia Hanoi, etc) and international labels (Tiger, Heineken, etc). In the early 2000s, some restaurants in Saigon began to brew their own beers, most noticeably in Hoa Vien Brauhaus, the very first beer brewing pub in Vietnam. It was Pilsner and stemmed from the cultural exchange between Vietnam and Czech Republic, the home of Pilsner beer.

However, perhaps the most remarkable transition in beer culture has taken place in 2015. Many expatriates started to brew craft beers for fun and to make branded breweries based on the warm appreciation of local and ex-pat consumers in Vietnam.

Centered in Ho Chi Minh City, several brands started to be recognized as quality craft brewery brands, including Te Te, East West, Belgo, BiaCraft, Heart of Darkness, Pasteur Street Brewing Company. New brands - 7 Bridges, Winking Seal, Beervana, Steersman, and Deme Beer - continue to expand the choices of craft breweries at the restaurants and improve the atmosphere at local bars and clubs.

There is a saying that "once you try and learn to appreciate craft beers, you will never be able to get back to branded factory beers". Vietnamese craft beers are upgrading their uniqueness by leveraging native ingredients to create flavors that accompany the nature, temperature, humidity, culture, and foods of the country.
