Chilica on Shark Tank: Elevating Vietnamese Chili Sauce to New Heights
In the third episode of Shark Tank Season 7, Chilica left a lasting impression on investors with its mission to elevate the value of Vietnamese agricultural products and its meticulous process of crafting high-quality fermented chilli sauce.
Chilica isn’t just another condiment; it represents a significant step forward for Vietnamese farmers, providing them with a stable market for their produce. With a professional production process that meets international standards, Chilica’s products are both health-conscious and rich in natural flavors. Confident in their vision, Chilica sought an investment of $500,000 for a 5% equity stake.
Though the deal didn’t close, Chilica made a lasting impact on the show and its viewers. So, what made Chilica stand out? Let’s dive in with Chus!
A Passion to Elevate Vietnamese Agriculture
Nguyen Thanh Hien, the founder of Chilica, was driven by a pressing concern: despite Vietnam’s strong agricultural foundation, many of its crops often face the risk of being unsellable.
This isn’t just a challenge for farmers but a broader issue for the entire agricultural sector. Chilica recognized that while Vietnamese crops have immense potential, the lack of advanced and professional processing methods means that their post-harvest value often falls short of expectations.
Determined to change this, Chilica aimed to create a more sustainable market for Vietnamese farmers. They went beyond just supporting raw produce; their ambition was to transform these crops into high-quality products with exceptional value.
To achieve this, Chilica heavily invested in cutting-edge technology and advanced production processes. Drawing on over 30 years of experience in microbiology and chemistry, Chilica has crafted fermented chilli sauces that are not only packed with flavor but also meet international standards. This ensures that Vietnamese agricultural products, once processed, can generate higher profits and reach global markets, thus enhancing the value of Vietnam’s agricultural sector.
Currently, the majority of Chilica’s fermented chilli sauces are exported, bringing in 99% of their revenue from overseas markets. However, in Vietnam, Chilica is still relatively unknown to many consumers. To further establish its presence and expand its reach, Chilica is not only focusing on processing technology but also placing great emphasis on sourcing high-quality ingredients.
High-Quality Vietnamese Ingredients
Quality ingredients are the cornerstone of Chilica’s richly flavored fermented chilli sauces. After an extensive search, Nguyen Thanh Hien chose chilies grown in Đồng Tháp, where the vibrant red peppers provide the ideal flavor profile. This careful selection ensures that Chilica’s sauces are made from the best possible raw materials.
Moreover, chilies are a relatively easy crop to grow but often suffer from fluctuating demand, leading to oversupply and low prices. Chilica confidently sources its chilies directly from Đồng Tháp farmers, avoiding reliance on middlemen and ensuring a stable supply throughout the production process.
Strategically located near the chili farms in Đồng Tháp, Chilica’s production facility minimizes transportation time, keeping the chilies fresh and reducing the risk of contamination or spoilage. This proximity allows Chilica to preserve the nutritional value and the spicy, fresh flavor of the chilies, setting their sauce apart from others that often lose their natural taste during processing.
Exclusive Fermentation Technology
Chilica is proud to be one of only three companies worldwide to successfully implement natural fermentation technology on a large scale.
This unique approach sets the brand apart. Instead of using artificial acetic acid vinegar like many other hot sauces, Chilica employs a 12-month natural fermentation process using rice vinegar. This method not only retains the spicy, fresh taste and nutritional value of the chilies but also imparts a natural tanginess that reflects the essence of Vietnamese ingredients.
This distinctiveness goes beyond flavor—it embodies Chilica’s commitment to delivering high-quality products that are close to nature and celebrate the culinary heritage of Vietnam in every bottle of their chilli sauce.

Leaving a Mark Despite No Investment
Chilica made a strong impression on Shark Tank, yet no Shark decided to invest. Despite having everything in place, from product to production process, Chilica was just one step away from scaling up its business and securing a consistent market. This is something not every company can confidently claim when appearing on the show.
The Sharks Had Differing Opinions (Photo: VTV)
Shark Phi Van felt she couldn’t contribute much beyond financial support. She wanted to be more involved in the business’s growth, so she chose not to invest.
Shark Minh Beta felt his experience in this field was limited, and the asking price was too high, so he also passed on the investment.
Meanwhile, Shark Thai was looking for riskier start-ups that needed more robust support. To him, Chilica was already too solid and didn’t present a big enough challenge.
Sharks Binh and Hung made investment offers, but Chilica had higher expectations, so they couldn’t reach a final agreement.
Chilica’s journey on Shark Tank may not have resulted in an investment deal, but it undeniably left a strong impression. The brand’s commitment to quality, from the careful selection of ingredients to its exclusive fermentation process, sets it apart in the food industry.
